Powertrain Test Bench

This test bench is used for testing complete powertrains of conventional and hybrid construction in any configuration as well as single components like internal combustion engines, electric and wheel hub motors, gearboxes, clutches, axles etc.

Two identical test rigs permit optimum simulation of mounting conditions in the real vehicle. There are also two hydraulic actuators to include roadway surface excitation and vertical forces in the system.

The test bench consists essentially of two electric drive machines and an automation and measured data capture system.

Climatic chambers with variable temperatures between -60°C and + 100°C and corresponding relative humidity are used for testing separate components under various environmental conditions.

The test signals and loads to be applied are provided by road test measurements or the online computation of a real-time vehicle model on the test bench. The hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) option allows simulation of dynamic vehicle states with integration of active drive control systems on the test bench. We can also do associated damage analyses in our accredited materials testing laboratory.

Typical applications / tasks

  • Testing the functions of chassis control systems, starting tests and clutch tests.
  • Testing of switching strategies (hybrid, gradients, etc.)
  • Engine cold-start testing
  • Start-stop testing
  • Endurance and polycyclic endurance testing of engines and gearboxes
  • Simulation of special driving conditions
