IABG establishes reference system for simulation network cross-linkable on a world-wide scale

In the year of its 50th anniversary IABG is able to present yet another innovation in its technology centre in Ottobrunn: the reference system for a cross-linkable simulation network for tactical training and mission preparation for the German Air Force.

Despite substantial budget cuts and diminishing resources the German Armed Forces is tasked with ensuring the high-quality tactical training of its jet crews for mission preparation and - in light of a possible deployment - the interaction training of all forces involved.

Here, IABG offers a solution which transfers different tactical training elements into an interlaced simulation network. In this context, IABG is able to resort to its experience of many years within the area of networked simulation.

Already in the course of the trade show ITEC 2011, IABG presented its concept "Distributed Simulation Network for Air Operation Training" which interconnects tactical flight simulators at various locations using the simulation and testing environment of the German Federal Armed Forces (SuTBw) and thus allows the training of world-wide missions together with allied forces.

In the context of a sample setup the tactical flight simulator MILSIM (Man-in-the-Loop-Simulation) was connected with the simulation systems PACTOS (PATRIOT simulation) and SIMBURG (simulation of the LV frigate F124) in IABG’s technology centre to demonstrate the mission preparation across forces in a joint scenario. Afterwards, the mission data analysis system (MiDAS) provided detailed tactical and technical analyses during mission follow-up.

This reference system for an Air Force simulation network is being developed and operated in Ottobrunn and is available for advance developments, tests as well as for informal visits. At present, the focus lies on the integration of sensors of a targeting pod to simulate the entire active chain for close air combat.

A unique feature of the simulation network is its full compatibility with the simulation and testing environment of the German Armed Forces (SuTBw); i. e. it is ready to be interlaced with the existing systems of the armed forces. It can thus already be used for tests and advancements and - in future - also for tactical training measures.

With its competencies in the area of networked simulation IABG is prepared to support the armed forces and, in particular, the Air Force in the implementation of new training opportunities, similar to the US exercise series "VIRTUAL FLAG".
