New EMC and Acoustics Laboratories in the IABG Space Test Centre

Due to the continuously growing rate of its utilisation, the Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory in the Space Test Centre gradually reached its capacity limits. At the beginning of 2002, therefore, the construction of a second EMC chamber was decided on IABG - Space Test Centre - EMC chamberin which up to 40 GHz can be tested in conformance with aerospace and automotive industry standards.

The new laboratory was completed in the specified time and costs framework and commissioned on time with accreditation in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 in October 2002.

The new measuring chamber has dimensions of approximately 4.5 m x 5.5 m. It is completely lined with ferrite absorbers and partially clad with modern incombustible pyramid absorbers. As a consequence of the spatial link to the existing large EMC laboratory, all facilities such as the 400 Hz supply and the transmission amplifier and metrology receiver are also usable in the new laboratory.

A good start for the new measuring chamber was the performance of qualification tests for Rohde & Schwarz and Britax-Sell in the last quarter of 2002.

Similarly in October last year, the newly erected Acoustics Laboratory was commissioned.

The IABG Acoustics Laboratory is equipped with a free field laboratory with acoustically hard flooring in accordance with DIN, which is suitable for acoustic free field tests and for qualification and engineering tests.
There in future various acoustics analyses will be performed on motor vehicles and automotive components. BMW has already got know and value this facility in a short period of time and uses this new laboratory intensively. The following investigations are possible:
IABG - Space Test Centre - Acoustics Laboratory

  • Ascertaining the sound level at the receiver location by means of acoustic level measurements
  • Ascertaining the emission locations by means of acoustic intensity measurements
  • Ascertaining mechanical-acoustic transfer functions.

Besides the necessary sensors for sound pressure and acceleration measurements, mobile data recording systems are available (24 and 44 channels) for operating and hammer impulse measurements.

The measurements area of the acoustics laboratory measuring about 50 m2 is equipped with an elevated platform for investigations on cars.
