VERNET for more security in transactions in the internet - Best practice examples as incentives for innovation

With the VERNET program – safe and reliable transactions in open networks – the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology has set up an important program in order to enhance the acceptance of new technologies and services. The aim is the development and testing of new security technologies for open communications networks, in particular the internet. The project with an overall budget of about € 14.4. million will be proportionately funded in accordance with the sponsorship guidelines of the Ministry with about € 8.8 million. IABG mbH in Ottobrunn and the Munich Management Consultants bpu were commissioned with the accompanying scientific research. The program is supported by the project sponsor Multimedia in the German Aerospace Centre (DLR).

Konrad Rosmus, the IABG member of staff responsible for the accompanying research: 'By sponsoring seven innovative ideas, best practice examples are created for IT security technology with which own prejudices can be reduced, the security in the World Wide Web enhanced and the acceptance of new media, in particular in e-commerce, clearly increased. This is achieved by observing the whole cycle of an exemplary IT service and not isolated individual segments of a value creation chain'.

The VERNET projects are due to run until the end of 2004 and cover a wide spectrum of topics, starting with secure operating systems via innovative SW development methods through to mobile coding units and long-tem archiving.

The individual VERNET projects were commenced in the second half of 2001. In the meantime, respectively, the first phases of the requirements analyses and groundwork tasks have been completed. Thereby it was revealed that adequate concepts exist for the demanding technological challenges and efficient innovative solutions can be expected, whereby, in one instance, the bridge-building between basis technology and concrete application between two VERNET projects has already been successfully accomplished.
