HiMoNN (Highly Mobile Network Node), a mobile ad hoc network originally conceived and developed by IABG for the military, is also ideal for applications by the police, border guards, and rescue services. HiMoNN performs especially well in situations where a variety of task forces have to be deployed, for instance at major gatherings like an international soccer game or a demonstration. In such situations, the mobile network effectively enhances the wireless network employed by public safety organisations (BOS).
Capabilities of HiMoNN
- HiMoNN has a self-configuring network to handle text, data, and video information, and it guarantees high performance with rapid field reaction times through interactive real-time displays on the system's highly mobile clusters. HiMoNN does not require a fixed network infrastructure, and is a robust alternative utilising autonomous rerouting to adapt to the wireless topology. HiMoNN can thus be put into action easily and quickly.
- At the network level, HiMoNN demarcates the sub-networks such that each of the task groups can be fed selective information.
- The most modern encryption and authentication technologies preclude eavesdropping and tampering along the data transmission path. If desired, the exchange of information can also be prioritised.
- HiMoNN supports the new generation IP suite, making it feasible to transfer the information via interfaces to any desired target, even over the commercial Internet.
HiMoNN as a „Key Enabler”
HiMoNN functions as a key enabler for managing networked applications, by forwarding all the
sensor data to an operations center, where it is consolidated to generate a comprehensive display of the field situation. This feature has many pluses, while it facilitates:
- Decision-making by the task force leader through:
- Simulation of available options
- Generation of alternatives
- Depiction of similar situations encountered in the past
- Rapid comprehension of the situation upon entering the action zone
- Transmission of deployment plans to all relevant nodes in real time in oral, textual, and visual forms
- Enhanced freedom of action through selfsynchronisation of task forces by ensuring that all parties are aware of mission goals, have access to the latest findings, and have detailed information on the opponent's approach
- The outcome are faster response times that increase the operational effectiveness.
In line with the current trend, HiMoNN integrates commonly available and reasonably priced hardware into the most modern network protocols, while rugged components are utilised to meet tough application requirements. The most stringent demands on technical perfection and economics are not a priori mutually exclusive.
