Voice over IP

Voice over IP uses a computer network as the foundation for the Internet protocol. The essential difference from conventional telephony is that the spoken information is not transmitted via a switch connection in a telephone network, but rather is split up into IP packages which reach their destination via a non-fixed Internet route. IP telephone can provide the infrastructure (network) of other communication services.

Voice as a "real time" application places specific demands on transmission and communication technology. VoIP, on the other hand, has many requirements for transmitting and processing data packages in terms of time delay, time delay variation and the completeness of data.

Conversion from traditional transmission technology to IP-based transmission primarily means a simpler and less expensive telephone system. From today’s perspective, the introduction of VoIP is recommended for new installations. Whether or not migration from an existing telecommunications systems technology is advantageous must be investigated individually in each specific case. This depends on several factors, such as the performance of the existing data network.
