Just
under 2 years ago, IABG won an invitation to tender from the European Space Agency, ESA, for a study of different
mechanisms for the secure transmission of Internet contents via satellite. A part of the study was the specification
of a demonstrator, which would verify the study results and make them accessible to a wider public.
Moreover, IABG was commissioned with the realisation of the demonstrator. As part of the project, a testbed
was set up, which implemented the secure transmission of different application data from the fields of telemedicine,
multimedia streaming, audio and video conferencing and distributed databanks. This transmission can be undertaken
selectively via real or simulated networks. The testbed was initially assembled, configured and tested at IABG.
Thereafter followed its transport to ESA in Noordwijk, where it was successfully integrated into the ESA test
environment on 11. September.
The knowledge obtained from the project is included in the business build-up of the IABG business segment
Advanced IP Services and Teleport.
Further information on this project
is provided by ESA on its Internet site. Our points of contact for this project can be reached under
Advanced-IP@IABG.de.
The Advanced IP Service business segment in Department IK42 deals with the development and provision of
innovative Internet services, for example, the new Internet protocol IPv6 and with supporting mobility in the
Internet or with secure Internet communications. Besides the terrestrial Internet, Internet access via satellite,
as offered by the IABG Teleport to its customers, represents a potential field of application for such innovative
Internet services.
