In 2005 IABG was contracted by the German research centre for geosciences to support the project management in the preparation of the tsunami early warning system for Indonesia.

On 11 November 2008 - about four years after the devastating tsunami disaster, the German-Indonesian-Tsunami-Early-Warning-System (GITEWS) was inaugurated by the Indonesian president Yudhoyono in Jakarta.  Mr. Thomas Rachel the Parliamentary Secretary of State with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research represented the German government.

A one-year test phase is now due which is supposed to optimize and complete the coordination of the various system components.

Since 2005 IABG supports the project management in the total coordination as technical advisor and is responsible for the consideration of the results gathered via the various work groups, e.g. for geophysical sensors, analysis and visualization of data. This year IABG was additionally contracted to carry out total system tests.

For this purpose IABG has developed a test bed, which was also applied in the context of the inauguration event. By feeding the system with historical or simulated sensor data matching a real course of events it represents the central testing and training element.
