Human Factors

IABG - Human FactorsHuman behaviour plays a central role in military and police deployment, and also affects the working day of ordinary citizens. Human error in one individual can have catastrophic results for many. Consequently, we firmly believe that all aspects of human behaviour should be taken into consideration both in technical developments and in training measures.

This task is performed by our Human Factors team. This interdisciplinary expert group applies its social and behavioural scientific expertise in social-technical approaches and staff training initiatives. Both our military and non-military clients benefit from this. For, by taking account of human behaviour at an early stage, the risk of human failure can be asymptotically reduced.

Simulation of human behaviour

One of the core competences of our “Human Factors” team is the simulation of human behaviour. This process is used to perform an in-depth scientific examination of whether certain individuals actually possess a number of previously defined qualities. This knowledge plays a decisive role in the selection of management. However, human factors simulators are designed to be integrated into technical simulators, thus, for example, making it possible to integrate the information processing requirements of future users in the development of new aircraft, cars or computer systems.

Our “Human Factors” team has already developed simulators and demonstrators for human behaviour for the German Armed Forces. These include:

  • Human Behaviour Representation (HRB)
  • Mass Behaviour Representation (MBR)
  • Organisation Behaviour Representation (OBR)

Crisis management

A further area covered is that of crisis management. Here, the team offers seminars on the appropriate way to deal with complex situations. As part of this process, the team establishes crisis managers’ qualities and the methods they employ in crisis situations. The team also trains these people in proven methods of crisis management and uses computer simulation to analyse human behaviour, thereby enabling managers to deal successfully with crisis situations.

Our “Human Factors” team offers a series of seminars designed to improve managers’ systems thinking in crisis situations. These focus on areas such as:

  • modelling & simulation
  • systemic thinking
  • complex problem solving
