IABG develops test facility for Continental

For functional optimization and conceptual validation of an innovative fully electrical brake-by-wire system developed by Continental, IABG has implemented a Hardware In the Loop (HIL) test system which contains an interface to a real time vehicle for Continental.

The test system’s main area of application is the validation of the interlaced system functions of the brake systems and the system communication as well as the execution of more extensive investigations.

In particular the HIL test facilities are used for commissioning and functional validation of the system network and for system functionality tests including fail safe investigations. The investigation and optimization of the base functions and the energy management of the brake system as well as its interaction with the simulated on-board system are also included in the test scope.

The HIL system is supplemented by a customised simulation environment, which simulates the vehicles driving dynamic characteristics in real time. Hence the communication between the system components and the behaviour in case of failure of individual components can be tested using various driving manoeuvres and operational conditions.

Furthermore, automated testing was developed for the HIL system, so that the user can freely specify test procedures and have the automated test facility execute them. The test facility thus provides a maximum of flexibility with test case preparation and implementation.

By linking the system to a testing, configuration and management tool, the alignment of specification and test cases as well as the reporting are supported.

Equipped with this large number of functions, the IABG HIL system proved to be an efficient development and test tool in the course of the development process. Above all, the high degree of automation and consequent test depth and efficiency result not least in time and cost savings for the development of future brake systems.

IABG’s HIL system was developed based on dSPACE technology, a leading tool manufacturer for applications within the automotive industry.
