IABG invests EUR 28 million in new Technology Centre

IABG broke ground on its new Technology Centre. With this EUR 28 million project, the high-tech Ottobrunn company is investing in its long-term sustainability. Hans Spitzner, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology in Bavaria, gave an address on the occasion of the official start of construction.

The IABG Technology Centre was designed by Munich-based WSSA Architekten GmbH, which won a competition for this purpose. Their design envisages a trapezoidal building with six floors and two lower garage levels. A unique feature is the roof-covered atrium, which will incorporate a cafeteria. There will also be a modern conference centre and an integrated, simulation-assisted planning practice centre. The gross floor area of the new building is approx. 18,000 square metres. As general contractor, Dipl.-Ing. Wilhelm Markgraf GmbH from Munich is responsible for the completion of the building, due to be finished by December of this year.

For IABG mbH, established in 1961, it was clear from the outset that its Technology Centre would be built in close proximity to its existing analysis and test centres. Furthermore, at the so-called technology and innovation park (TIP) in Ottobrunn/Taufkirchen they have good company, namely the many other firms in the aerospace industry located here. “In the future, we don't want to miss out on the synergies we have leveraged from this set-up in the past,” says Prof. Schwarz: “You just don't walk away from a location like this.”

The State Government of Bavaria welcomes this move. Hans Spitzner, State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology in Bavaria sees IABG as a ‘beacon' in the TIP. “We are preparing for the positive effects generated by regional and national cooperation between businesses from one sector or field of competence, between renowned universities and research institutions, between competent suppliers and demanding customers,” says Spitzner.

However, for IABG the Technology Centre is just the first step. A second construction phase has already been planned and approved. However, this will not to be implemented for a few more years.
