IABG is consortium partner in the showcase project enera

IABG is a consortium partner in the enera project under leadership of the Oldenburg-based energy service provider EWE. enera will be one of the largest German pilot projects in energy transition and funding applications are currently being put in within the framework of the programme “Schaufenster Intelligente Energie” of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. IABG contributes its expertise and experience to this project, particularly in the areas of communication infrastructures and IT security.

enera is a value-added network consisting of new and “classic” energy industry stakeholders. A stable and economically optimised energy system, in which new business models and technologies can rapidly develop, is guaranteed through technological advancement and continuous digitalisation.

“Network, market and data are the project components we want use to reduce the expenses of conventional network development and to avoid costs for consumers. In 20 months of preliminary project work one fact has already been established: enera has the potential to serve as a blueprint for Germany and to become the next big step towards the transition in energy policy”, comments enera Project Manager Christian Arnold.

The enera model region in northwest Germany comprises the districts of Aurich, Friesland and Wittmund, as well as the city of Emden, and offers ideal conditions for the showcase project: An above-average high proportion of renewable energies – particularly wind energy – in the energy generation process that already today leads to an oversupply situation.

Secure communication that is also highly available in cases of crisis is the essential basis for stable operation of the intelligent energy network of the future, and thus for guaranteeing supply security in Germany. “enera allows IABG to implement secure and highly available communication on a large test scale”, states Prof. Dr. Rudolf F. Schwarz, CEO of IABG.

As an established supplier for utility companies and distributed network operators, IABG contributes to the project its experience in the operation of critical infrastructures. With the implementation of communication infrastructures, both wireless as well as wired, IABG focuses on highest availability and blackout resistance. IABG furthermore supports Smart Meter Gateway administrators as well as distributed network operators as security provider when introducing their IT security management systems (ISMS) pursuant to technical guidelines and/or to the IT security catalogue.
