Joint computer-assisted exercise of NATO and Russian Forces on IABG premises

From 16. to 25. January a computer-assisted exercise of the NATO together with the Russian Federation Forces took place in the IABG technology centre. The exercise, which was initiated by the NATO Russia Council and was held in the US for the first time in 2004, was carried out in Germany this year. Under Air Force aegis the host nation used the ultramodern IABG premises and equipment.

More than 70 participants from 14 NATO states and members of the Russian Federation Forces jointly planned the defence of ballistic missiles of small and medium range in the IABG exercise head office.

In the context of a joint exercise of the NATO and Russia the possibilities of cooperative planning in a virtual scenario were tested. Joint missile defence missions were staged for certain operational areas and tested via simulation.

The major political importance of the exercise was underlined by the visit of high-ranking representatives of NATO and other participating nations during the “Distinguished Visitor Day “on 22. January, among them the chairman of the NATO military committee, the Canadian Four-Star General Raymond Henault as well as the representative of the host nation Germany, Lieutenant General Heinz Marzi.

During the information day on 22. January media representatives had the opportunity to observe the top-class exercise at close range. OTL i.G. Kuebart (BMVg) commenced the day providing a first overview of content and targets of the joint exercise. He explicitly praised the smooth co-operation between the participants of the exercise, the good working results and the excellent support by IABG. Subsequently, Mr. Braitinger, the head of the defence and security division of IABG, introduced his company and particularly the portfolio of his division, which is oriented to the specific requirements of the Bundeswehr to the media representatives, which had travelled from far to be in Ottobrunn that day.

Highlight of the event was certainly the following tour to the ultramodern simulation integration test laboratory of IABG with the demonstration of a simulated simultaneous anti-missile defence, followed by an inspection of the head office, where officers of NATO and the Russian Federation developed the operational planning for a simultaneous missile defence in a joint „Coordination Group“.

The event ended with a press conference and short comments of high-ranking military representatives, General Henault, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and Lieutenant General Marzi, Deputy of the Air Force inspector as representative of the host nation Germany as well as Major General Yagolnikov, representative of the Russian Ministry of Defence. They unanimously stressed the importance of a joint tactical missile defence and provided an outlook on future cooperation possibilities. They were also very content with the obtained results and complimented IABG on their outstanding scientific support.
