Hydrogen plays a central role in the energy transition. Produced in a climate-neutral way, it has the potential to permanently reduce CO2 emissions in industry and transport. H2 will also make a contribution in the future as a means of storing green electricity. A significant advantage: Hydrogen can be used in all sectors, for example in electricity and heat supply, in the chemical industry or in the transport sector - the ideal substance for sector coupling.

Proof of safety of hydrogen technologies

From the extraction of H2 and its storage in suitable tanks to the use of hydrogen in fuel cells - we qualify entire systems and also individual components for their safe use. 

We have extensive testing facilities at several test centers, including a test site for conducting high-risk tests

Whether electrolysers, cryogenic pumps or pressure accumulators - we not only take care of testing, but also partial steps from development to administrative handling in connection with the approval of products.

    For these tests, IABG can rely on new, highly efficient water-hydraulic pressure generators as well as new burst-proof test chambers. This makes it possible to test very large hydrogen storage tanks at very high static and dynamic pressures. For unconventional tank shapes and tanks exceeding the size of the test chambers, we use our High-Risk Test Center in Lichtenau.

Project "CryoTRUCK"
Test of a tank and storage system for cryogenic hydrogen for commercial vehicles

Hydrogen is currently stored mainly in gaseous form and, for weight reasons, mostly in CFRP-sheathed pressure vessels. To achieve the highest possible storage densities, which are necessary for long ranges of H2-powered vehicles, the hydrogen is stored under very high pressures. Pressure vessels must therefore be designed to safely withstand the wide range of stresses that occur during operation. To ensure this safety, pressure vessels must be subjected to elaborate tests (e.g. internal pressure loads at very high and low temperatures, fire or drop tests, etc.) before they are first used and also later during operation. 

In the joint project CryoTRUCK, funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), we are developing new test procedures to safeguard cryogas storage systems as well as cryogas refueling technology. We are applying the developed test procedures in practice for the first time: a) for component and system testing with cryogenic pressurized gas and b) for the qualification of hydraulic test procedures for storage systems.
